Mission and Overview

Mission

The mission of the West Virginia Symphony League is to support the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra by fundraising projects, by stimulating community interest in the WVSO, by assisting the WVSO Board, and by promoting friendly relations within the WVSO family.

Overview

The West Virginia Symphony League began in 1942 as the Women’s Committee of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.  When the Charleston Symphony became the West Virginia Symphony, the Women’s Committee officially became the West Virginia Symphony League.

The goal of the West Virginia Symphony League is to support the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra through gifts of time and talent.  By doing so, members make a commitment to enrich the lives of their families, communities and state with the continuous gift of fine music.

The most important function of the League, beyond raising critically needed funds for the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, is making new friends and providing needed service to the many WVSO/WVSL projects.  Members support the WVSO in fundraising and community outreach events.

The League presents a variety of exciting fundraising projects each year.  This year’s events include our Gala, the annual Fashion Show, the relatively new and very successful Teddy Bear Tea, a Spring Golf Tournament, and Dancing with the Stars, which was new last year.  In community-oriented activities, WVSL members assist the WVSO with Young People’s Concerts, reaching thousands of children several times a year.  We end our year with the greatly anticipated, family-oriented Symphony Sunday, held annually the first weekend in June on the campus of the University of Charleston.  This is now a three day event, starting Friday with an enthusiastic and creative party, progressing to the Saturday night rehearsal, and finally to Symphony Sunday.  Sunday includes a brunch and a special dinner in addition to the lawn activities, music and performances.  The traditional free performance of the WVSO and fireworks ends the evening.

The League entire membership meets in September, January and May.  The Executive Committee and Board of Directors meet monthly to help direct the ongoing projects.  New members are welcome.  For a nominal fee and the purchase of concert tickets, each member becomes a partner in supporting the many activities of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra through gifts of time and talent.  By doing so, members make a commitment to enrich the lives of their families, communities and state with the continuous gift of fine music.
