Mission and Overview

Mission

The mission of the West Virginia Symphony League is to support the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra by fundraising projects, by stimulating community interest in the WVSO, by assisting the WVSO Board, and by promoting friendly relations within the WVSO family.

Overview

The West Virginia Symphony League began in 1942 as the Women’s Committee of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.  When the Charleston Symphony became the West Virginia Symphony, the Women’s Committee officially became the West Virginia Symphony League.

The goal of the West Virginia Symphony League is to support the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra through gifts of time and talent.  By doing so, members make a commitment to enrich the lives of their families, communities and state with the continuous gift of fine music.

The most important function of the League, beyond raising critically needed funds for the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, is making new friends and providing needed service to the many WVSO/WVSL projects.  Members support the WVSO in various ways including staffing the Young People’s Concerts, reaching thousands of children three times a year.  A new project is to provide Brunch on days of the Youth Orchestra performances to the members and families who travel to Charleston.  The League has also established a scholarship fund for music-related students at the University of Charleston.

The League presents a variety of exciting fundraising projects each year which include the annual Symphony Ball, a fantastic Fashion Show, a Winter Showcase, Spring Golf Tournament and the greatly anticipated family oriented Symphony Sunday held annually the first weekend in June on the campus of the University of Charleston.

The League entire membership meets in September, January and May. The Executive Committee and Board of Directors meet monthly to help direct the ongoing projects.  New members are welcome.  For a nominal fee and the purchase of concert tickets, each member becomes a partner in supporting the many activities of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
