WEST VIRGINIA SYMPHONY LEAGUEFALL GENERAL MEETINGCHARLESTON TOWN CENTER MARRIOTTSeptember 12, 200611:00 a.m.M I N U T E SOpening comments and President’s report Kathy Beckett, President, welcomed fifty-seven members and guests to the Fall General Meeting at 11:45 a.m. Following a social gathering with tea sandwiches, desserts, and refreshments, sincere appreciation was extended to Hospitality co-chairs, Sara Walker and JoEllen Zacks, and their committee for organizing the tea. President Beckett extended a special appreciation to the Marriott for underwriting the event and asked that the Marriott be remembered when planning your special occasions. The Spring General meeting will be held at the Governor’s Mansion in May. After a brief introduction of officers, President Beckett reminded everyone the 2006-2007 West Virginia Symphony League (WVSL) rosters are available and asked that any corrections be forwarded to her. This year the rosters were printed compliments of Jackson & Kelly law firm. In addition, the WVSL newsletter, The Score will be sent via email. Hard copies are available upon request. To conclude, President Beckett reiterated the importance of the WVSL fundraising towards the support of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO). The membership requirement of purchased season tickets is also a significant support to the WVSO. On that note, Past President Janice Lessley presented WVSO Executive Director Paul Helfrich with an additional gift from the WVSL of $5,000.00 making a total of $65,000.00 in financial support. Mr. Helfrich reminded everyone of opening night September 15th and 16th, and expressed his sincere appreciation of the League’s efforts in making the enjoyment of the WVSO possible in our community. Presentation of WVSL minutes Secretary, Yolanda Tam presented the minutes from the Spring General meeting. Copies of the minutes were available at the welcome table, at your tables, and also on the Symphony League website www.wvsl.org. Secretary Tam asked if there were no corrections or questions, for a motion to approve the minutes. Sallie McClaugherty motioned. Iris Riggs seconded. The motion carried. Presentation of the WVSL Distinguished Service Award Helen Lodge presented Patti Carnemolla along with her husband Reggie, the WVSL Distinguished Service Award. In addition to the various committees, Patti served as Secretary, as Treasurer, and as Vice President of fundraising. In 1999 Patti also stepped in as league President. Patti and her husband continue opening up their home each Christmas for the new member brunch. Patti thanked everyone for sharing their knowledge that has helped her help the league. Patti encouraged every new member to get involved with the league right away to enjoy the full benefits. WVSL Committee reports Symphony Fashion Show: Helen Lodge reported the fashion show will be held on October 30th at the Clay Center. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served at 6:00 p.m., followed by the fashion show sponsored by Schwabes and Kelly’s Mens Shop. This year’s event will include a Musical Farce and champagne & chocolates after the show. Tickets are $50.00. The next committee meeting will be September 29th, at 3:00 p.m. at the home of Beth Ann Surber. Symphony Ball: Teresa Figueroa reported the Ball will be held December 1st at The Marriott. The theme is, Nutcracker Winter Wonderland. Tickets at $150.00 and include a photo in a sleigh, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dancing, champagne, and coffee. The band Sound Express will be performing. Models strolled through the meeting with some of the furs to be auctioned at the Ball. The next committee meeting will be September 22nd at Berry Hills. The first Teddy Bear Nutcracker Tea will be held on December 2nd in partnership with the Charleston Ballet. Tickets will be $25 or 4 tickets for $75. It will be a tea for children to enjoy with storytelling, and a sample performance of the Nutcracker with the Charleston Ballet performers in costume to meet the children. WVSL Golf event: Dee Rumbaugh reported the Golf event is the last Monday of April at Edgewood Country Club, and will be on April 30th 2007. The committee continues to get sponsors. United National Bank has already agreed to be a major sponsor for the outing. Symphony Sunday: Shelia Neal reported Symphony Sunday is held the first Sunday of June each year at the University of Charleston. The event will be held on June 3rd 2007. This will be the 25th Silver Anniversary of Symphony Sunday. Highlights of the past 25 years will be presented. The annual rehearsal dinner on Saturday June 2nd will be organized by founders, Rosalie Gaziano and Diana Amores. The Symphony Sunday Brunch will return to the venue and will be chaired by Sallie McClaugherty. All the delicious food, refreshments, and concessions will again be chaired by Helen Lodge. Meeting dates will be mailed to all committee members. Please mark your calendars now. This is our biggest fundraiser and will require 100 plus volunteers on Saturday and Sunday to make the event a success. Symphony Sunday 25th Anniversary committee: Rosalie Gaziano reported Symphony Sunday began with an idea to take the symphony outdoors. It quickly evolved to an annual event families and friends looked forward to with picnics on the lawn while enjoying the orchestra (family reunions have even been planned around the event). It is now a huge event that includes an elegant dinner under the tent on rehearsal night, an affair that includes activities for children among all the concessions on Sunday, the West Virginia Symphony Youth Orchestra performing, and of course the WVSO evening performance followed by fireworks! Dinner and champagne will kick off the committee meeting on September 14th, 5:00 p.m. at the home of Rosalie and Dominique Gaziano. Melonious Merchandise: Linda Jernigan reported ties by Vineyard Vines are now available at Kelly’s Mens Shop. Melonious merchandise including aprons, totes, mugs, and pins were on display for the members during the social gathering. Additional products are in development. Winter project: Patti Carnemolla reminded everyone of the Kroger Gift Cards available at $5 each. A local elementary raises 10,000.00 a year with the cards. Please reload and use your cards when shopping at Krogers. Other announcements were as follows: JoEllen Zacks reported there are a few watermelon recipe books available. The Books are $5 each. Lois Kaufmann announced her father will be honored at the Municipal Auditorium by the Charleston Community Musical Association and all are welcome to attend. President Beckett thanked her mother Ilene Beckett for becoming a new member to the WVSL and attending her first official meeting.
