Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Jane Powell announced the WVSL budget has been formalized and approved, with a commitment to the WVSO of $70,000 for the 2007-8 year.  Treasurer Powell also reported balances for the following accounts: BB&T, Wachovia and Melonious.

President’s Remarks

President Surber reminded current members to update their contact information at the registration table and new members to provide any missing information.  The roster will be printed at the end of the month.  She also noted that as the WVSL is the fundraising arm of the WVSO, there will be eight fundraising events in the year ahead, which may provide the opportunity to exceed our fundraising goal.

Events for 2007-8:

  1. Fashion Show – Helen Lodge & Sallie McClaugherty

Will be held on Monday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Clay Center.  Members are asked to sell to tickets at $35/each.   A reception will follow the fashion show, and the show will feature fashion trends and closet updating.  There will not be favors this year.

  1. Symphony Ball – Missy Rubin & Janet Victorson

Will be held on November 30 at the Marriott.  More details will be coming soon.

  1. Teddy Bear Tea – Ilene Beckett & Shelia Neal

The second annual tea, a combined fundraiser for the League and the Charleston Ballet, will be held on Sunday, December 2 at the Marriott.

  1. Golf Tournament – Lora Fulton

Will be held at Edgewood Country Club on April 28.

  1. Symphony Sunday – Shelia Neal & Teresa Figueroa

Event begins with a dinner on May 31 and Symphony Sunday follows on June 1.  Everyone’s help and enthusiasm is needed for this major event.

  1. Kroger Cards – Kelly George

We receive 5% of every dollar spent in quarterly payments.  The cards are accepted at any Kroger’s store and work like a credit or debit card.  They are also accepted at Kroger gas stations.  Cards are $5.

  1. Chocolate Sales – Sallie McClaugherty

Candy will be provided by Holl’s Chocolates for classical concerts and Linda in Buckhannon for Pops concerts.  The candies sell for $3/box and the sales goal is 100 for each performance (50 per night).

  1. Melonious Merchandise – Linda Jernigan

Melonious, our trademark created and given by John Auge, is available on many items including silver and gold charms from Petit Jewelry, as well as enamel charms and pins.

Report from the WV Symphony Orchestra

Maestro Grant Cooper noted the WVSL’s work as an important part of the WVSO’s ability to perform and encouraged League members to serve as ambassadors by inviting friends and neighbors to concerts.  He reminded members that concert attendees could meet the musicians and soloists following each concert.  In Maestro Cooper’s seventh year with the WVSO, he will celebrate his 300th performance during the third performance of the Nutcracker.  He thanked all members for their support.

Paul Helfrich, Executive Director, and extended his greetings and the greetings of Pat Bond, WVSO board chair.  Director Helfrich discussed the importance of the endowment and recapitalization campaign, chaired by Dan Foster, with a goal of raising $8 million.  $4.5 million has already been raised.  He noted subscribers must be cultivated, invited and encouraged, and thanked League members for serving as advocates and for fundraising.

Other Announcements:

President Surber encouraged all members to ask a friend to join the League, which has almost reached 200 members.  Doubling our current membership would greatly increase our ability to support the WVSO while having a lot of fun.  President Surber then thanked all members for attending, with special thanks to Hospitality Co-Chairs JoEllen Zacks and Sara Walker.  President-Elect Yolanda Tam encouraged all current members to meet new members and guests.

With no further business to come before the league, President Surber adjourned the meeting at 11:10 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Emily S. Hopta

WVSL Secretary 2007-2008
