Teddy Bear Tea Party

The West Virginia Symphony League and Taylor Books sponsored the fourth annual Teddy Bear Tea Party  held at the Clay Center Grand Hall on December 6,2 009. There were 160 adults and children in attendance. The children were entertained with Goldilocks and the Three Bears, read by Rabbi Urecki. Monteia Childers' senior dancer performed a dance to the song, "The Teddy Bears' Picnic."  The children were invited to join the dancers for a chance to move with the music. This magical event felt like a visit to a real palace ballroom. The scene was grand with beautiful tea tables and rays of bright sunlight streaming through the expanding windows. The children were dressed in their finest, fitting for a grand affair at a palace. They surely dined and danced with the fairies--in make-believe. It truly was a magical event.

The Tea party was catered by Embassy Suites and sponsored by Hosts and Hostesses from members of the West Virginia Symphony League (WVSL). Homer Laughlin donated tea cup favors for the children.  Many thanks to the WVSL Tea committee who worked long hours to make this event a success.  Ilene Beckett

The Symphony Gala for the 2009-2010 year was held on Friday, October 23, 2009. A man for all seasons, Senator Dan S. Foster M.D. was honored with the “The Distinguished Service Award” for his service to the WVSO and pursuit of excellence.  Dr. Foster has made significant contributions to various areas, none more-so than to the cultural life and people of West Virginia. The reception and cocktails were enjoyed at the Governor's Mansion, hosted by the Governor and First Lady, followed by Dinner, Dancing and a Fabulous Auction in the Grand Lobby at the Clay Center.  The event was spectacular for all!

The first WVSL General Meeting of the year will be at the Governor's Mansion on September 16 (Wednesday) at 10:00 am.  We start with coffee and conversations then at 10:30 am proceed to the General Meeting.  All members please come and please bring new members!  All members should receive an invitation this week and are requested to respond as soon as possible, so the Governor's security team will allow you to enter the mansion (they will not unless they have your name on their list before the meeting).  If you do not receive an invitation, please mail or call Sara Walker  (wvsara@suddenlink.net or 304 343-4812).  An invitation might not arrive if we did not receive your renewal form (sent to WVSL members last Spring) to update your information, or if your address might have changed after you sent in your form.  If you have not yet sent in your renewal forms (and purchased your series tickets), please do so.  You may email your committee, address, email and phone information to the webmaster at scifinerd@gmail.com and mail any dues outstanding to Ruth Joseck (click on Executive button on the left for her address).

The 19th Annual Snowshoe Symphony Festival was wonderful!   Our own Mary Rose Nair and Grant Cooper were on Public Radio August 31 reviewing how wonderful the weekend was!

Who Will Shine and Glitter this Holiday Season?

Symphony in Fashion will launch the fabulous Fall Holiday collections on the runway of the Clay Center on November 10, 2009!  This year’s catwalk will showcase designs from Local Boutiques, with Charleston’s spectacular fashion guru, Tommie Sue Roberts, as commentator.
